First Public EV Charging Stations Celebrated

The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC), together with NIPSCO and South Shore Clean Cities representatives, invited region electric vehicle (EV) charging station owners, drivers and enthusiasts to celebrate the unveiling of NIRPC’s first EV public charging station near the NIRPC offices in Portage.

This charging station is supported by NIPSCO’s IN-Charge Around Town Program. The utility launched the program in 2014 to help make alternative fuels more accessible to northern Indiana drivers. This event also celebrated the success of the Around Town program in deploying 159 EV charging ports at more that 60 locations across northern Indiana.

The NIPSCO IN-Charge Around Town Electric Vehicle Program aims to make it easier and more affordable for businesses and organizations to install alternative fuel infrastructure. The program offered incentives to help with the up-front costs of public charging stations for electric vehicles, in addition to installation costs and software subscriptions. NIPSCO worked with South Shore Clean Cities in offering this program. This program was offered as part of a Supplemental Environmental Project under the NIPSCO New Source Review NOV settlement.
