River Heritage Conservancy is excited to reveal a preliminary design from their strategic partnership with Perkins&Will, an acclaimed international architecture and design firm renowned for creating immersive, nature-driven spaces for the design of the Whitewater Facility at Origin Park.

“Perkins&Will has been a strong partner in bringing our vision to life,” said Dennis Schnurbusch II, CEO of River Heritage Conservancy. “They go beyond architecture. They create experiences that reflect values of sustainability, community, and human connection. With their talent and insight, we’re not just building a whitewater course; we’re shaping a destination that will energize, inspire, and bring people together.”

Perkins&Will’s Living Design philosophy emphasizes regeneration, well‑being, and resilience, which perfectly complements Origin Park’s mission to transform formerly industrial land into vibrant public space. They are leading the design of guest amenities, such as food and retail, event spaces, and work with all partners in creating the overall map of the Whitewater Facility’s design.

“This global firm brings unmatched creativity and a deep commitment to designing with nature,” added Schnurbusch. “Together, we’re turning post‑industrial land into a place full of life, adventure, and belonging.”

Perkins&Will brings a long history of award‑winning projects in the Sports, Recreation, and Entertainment category including aquatic facilities, athletic centers, and mixed‑use venues. Their 90‑year legacy of creating “beautiful, awe‑inspiring, uplifting” spaces highlights their unique ability to design environments that resonate emotionally while championing functional performance and sustainability.

Planned to become a 430-acre greenspace, Origin Park is a transformative urban park reclaiming former landfills, junkyards, and neglected riverfront along the Ohio River in Southern Indiana. Designed to be a self-sustaining regional destination, the park will feature 22 miles of trails, a state-of-the-art Event Center, and a Whitewater Experience with rafting, zip lines, and more. Its revenue-generating components will support the long-term restoration and protection of over 170 acres of wetlands and natural areas, while offering immersive outdoor experiences and vital habitat for local wildlife. Once completed, Origin Park is projected to attract over 1.5 million visitors annually, create nearly 3,000 jobs, and fuel economic, environmental, and community revitalization across the region.
