River Heritage Conservancy and CenterPoint Energy Foundation Partner to Expand Environmental and STEM Programming at Origin Park

River Heritage Conservancy (RHC), the nonprofit organization behind the development of Origin Park, announced an expanded partnership with the CenterPoint Energy Foundation to launch a new environmental and STEM education initiative in 2026. The Foundation recently awarded $10,000 to support the effort, which will expand equitable access to hands-on learning experiences for youth and families across Southern Indiana.

This new initiative builds on the CenterPoint Energy Foundation’s pivotal 2024 investment of $7,700, which brought to life a community picnic area and outdoor classroom at Buttonbush Woods. Today, this space has become a thriving trailhead and vibrant entry point, welcoming visitors to explore and connect with nature at Origin Park.

“CenterPoint Energy is committed to making investments that make our communities better places to live, work and play,” said Mike Roeder, President of CenterPoint Energy Indiana. “Providing high-quality STEM and environmental education will build science confidence, foster environmental stewardship and promote healthy outdoor activities for residents in southern Indiana.”

The upcoming 2026 program will significantly broaden the park’s educational reach by partnering with local educators, nonprofit leaders, and cultural experts to deliver at least 24 free, nature-based workshops throughout the year.

These efforts directly advance the CenterPoint Energy Foundation’s mission to build thriving communities through STEM education, environmental stewardship, and equitable community vitality. The Foundation’s support focuses on strengthening educational opportunities, workforce readiness, and quality of life: particularly in under-resourced and underrepresented communities.

“CenterPoint Energy Foundation’s continued investment in Origin Park is helping us connect hundreds of learners to science, nature, and one another,” said Dennis Schnurbusch II, CEO of River Heritage Conservancy. “Their partnership is essential to building a stronger, more resilient, and environmentally aware region.”

RHC expects the initiative to reach more than 600 participants in 2026, with measurable impacts on environmental literacy, science engagement, and community connection.

Before the 2026 initiative launches, the community is invited to experience the wonder of nature firsthand during Origin Park’s next event: a Beginner Birding Program led by Andrew Melnykovych, field trip coordinator and past president of the Beckham Bird Club of Louisville. Together, participants will enjoy an easy paced walk through the park, spotting resident, migrant, and winter birds while learning identification tips and birding basics. This program is perfect for anyone curious about birding or eager to explore the park’s natural beauty.
